  • Someone Microwaved Fish in the Office Break Room and We All Have to Live With That
A stainless steel microwave on a counter in an office break room.

There is a moment, usually around 12:17 p.m., when the office goes quiet in the wrong way. Conversations stop. Someone looks up from a salad. Someone else sniffs, immediately regrets it, and you all understand at the same time: somebody has microwaved fish in the break room.

Not fresh fish at a nice restaurant by the water. Leftover fish. Reheated fish. Fish that had already lived one life, spent the night in a plastic container, rode to work in a tote bag, and has now been blasted back into existence by the shared microwave. That beep at the end is not a timer finishing. It is a warning siren that arrived too late.

The worst part is how democratic the suffering is. You did not order it. You did not cook it. You were just trying to heat up soup like a normal person with normal, non-weaponized lunch plans. Now the entire floor smells like a dock in August, your soup tastes faintly of the sea, and everyone who walks in for the next three hours will do the same slow turn and ask, "What is that smell?" as if any of us chose this.

The person responsible almost always acts innocent. "Is it that strong?" Yes. It is that strong. It is in the carpet now. It is in the meeting that starts at one. It will be in the elevator when you leave. A scented candle would take one look at this situation and quit. The microwave itself will need a week, a lemon, and some quiet time to recover, and even then every bag of popcorn until Friday will come with a faint, haunted note.

Every office has unwritten rules, and this is supposed to be rule number one. You can borrow a charger. You can take the last coffee if you make a new pot. You can even tell a long story about your weekend that is really just a list of errands. But you do not reheat fish in a small room that other humans are required to share. That is not lunch. That is a group experience nobody consented to.

There are so many other choices. A sandwich that minds its own business. A salad that makes no announcement. Pasta, which reheats like it was born for this moment. Even burnt popcorn, the previous office villain, at least has the decency to fade by mid-afternoon. Fish commits to the whole day. It settles in. It gets comfortable. It attends your performance review.

So to the fish microwaver, wherever you are: we are not mad about your diet. Eat all the salmon you want, at home, near an open window, with the full support of people who do not have to breathe it at their desks. Just leave the break room out of it. Some lunches are a personal journey. This one should have stayed personal.
