  • Snow Peak Recalls Propane Fireplace Inserts After the Lava Rocks Literally Exploded

Decorative rocks are supposed to sit quietly in your fireplace and look rustic. They are not supposed to explode. On October 8, 2026, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Snow Peak is recalling its Takibi propane fireplace inserts and lava rocks after one report of the lava rocks igniting and exploding inside the insert, causing minor property damage.

The details: Snow Peak USA of Portland, Oregon sold about 100 units of the Takibi propane insert — a 350 dollar add-on for the company's Pack & Carry Fireplace — online at Snowpeak.com during July 2026. The lava rocks, meant to distribute the flame evenly for an enhanced experience, had apparently been swapped for the wrong rock material at the factory in Taiwan, and internal testing later confirmed the problem.

No injuries have been reported, which is the kind of sentence you write while knocking on wood. The CPSC warns the exploding rocks pose a risk of serious injury or death from burn and fire hazards. Consumers should stop using the insert and lava rocks immediately and contact Snow Peak for a full refund; replacement lava rocks are available for those who keep the insert.

Snow Peak had already quietly alerted customers in July via Reddit and Instagram posts before the formal October recall. Props to the company for not pretending the volcano in your backyard was a feature.

It is the smallest recall of the year by units and the most dramatic by energy: a hundred fireplaces, one exploded-rock incident, and a lesson for every product designer — if the rocks go bang, they were the wrong rocks.

Owners should stop using the insert and lava rocks immediately, contact Snow Peak at 888-424-4916 or [email protected] for a full refund and a prepaid return label, and dispose of the recalled rocks according to local ordinances. Or keep the insert, get the replacement rocks, and never think about volcanic geology at the campsite again.
